I am tired of people talking about social media and the whole “keep on giving,” crap. Seriously, why should I keep on giving if I am not receiving anything in return. I spend time on Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Reddit and other major platforms and there is a reason for it, I get return for each minute I invest.
Take for example, my jeep breaks down. I need to fix it. I don’t want to pay a mechanic so I decide to fix it myself. Well, that’s my time. So I finally get it fixed, without putting a dime in it. I gave my time to fix the jeep and I am supposed to let my wife drive it until the next time it breaks? I am sorry, but things don’t work like that in real life. Whether it’s time or money that we put in, there needs to be a return for everything we do. And the same goes true when it comes to Social Media. Give, but have a strategy in place on how you can get a return on your time, otherwise it’s just a waste of time, a big ‘ol pile of waste.
Before diving into any platform remember these 3 things :
Bookmark and share this post:Choose. Strategize. Execute.

Hi, My name is Ritu. I am a member of SMA (Social Media Anonymous) ;-) & help bloggers and businesses utilize the social web.
The ‘give’ is meant to get you something back – an audience. The call-outs online to ‘give’ is to enable you to build an audience and that’s the benefit you’re getting out of giving. Once you have a sizeable audience, you can mine it better, if you know how to do it without losing the audience.
Give is one of the main tactics under ’strategize’.
@Karthik : Totally agree. But I want to stress the “choose” factor of using social media platforms as well. Most tend to dive into every single platform out there to hopefully garner a sizeable audience. but if your audience is completely different from what it should be, it’s once again a waste of time. Before strategy comes choice and choosing platforms that will give you maximum return should be the first priority.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.
