I usually don’t watch a lot of TV and the reason is simple, there is just too much information that I find hard to digest. About twenty minutes ago I was watching a show on Discovery Channel called ” Genius Sperm Bank ” which totally shocked me. This show was about sperm donation by people who rank high on intellect, physique, personality and other traits. Once again I am sure this will have some fingers pointing towards my direction but what the heck, I am entitled to my opinion. I will try and outline the process as to what happens in the Sperm Genius Bank.
The Process
Although it’s a bank, the transactions and the process of operation is much different than the traditional bank that we are used to. At the Sperm Genius Bank, they look for people who are noble prize winners, highly intellectual and have earned some kind of distinction within the society. Then they approach these individuals to donate their sperm so they can pass on their genes to supposedly ” help mankind by giving more intellect people to the society “.
All the information are kept secret. Most of the times babies are born through this process never meet their biological father. Each potential candidate is referred by a color code such as ” orange red ” or ” gray white ” and the information is never passed to the woman who will conceive a baby by using these sperms.
From The Show
As I was watching the show they interviewed one of the guys whose response made my jaw hit the floor. I suppose he is highly intelligent and has a masters in genetics. He refuses to marry and settle down because he does not want to limit his possibility of having only so many children with one woman. He says ” he wants to give more to the mankind ” by having children with a number of women. To date he has nineteen children ( 19 ), out of which 9 are through the sperm donated to the Genius Sperm Bank and 10 from different women he has been with. He says he will have many more children with women who are worthy of children that might have his intellect and physique and all that bullshit.
I don’t even have words to describe as to how disgusted and frustrated I am at the moment. I am not against sperm or egg donation, just the fact that are people doing it with someone they will probably never meet face to face because they want their children to be smart and intelligent, beats me.
This guy that I wrote above, somehow was able to meet with one of his children who was conceived from his donated sperm. He had a chance to meet his daughter at a hotel lobby for 30 minutes. His daughter was 10 years old and this is the first time he ever got to see her. 30 minutes that’s it. And how exactly would you feel if you met your father 10 years later and he only had 30 minutes for you? I would be pretty disgusted and extremely sad.
All in all, my point is - sometimes we just need the nature to take over. Some things just should be left unaltered. If you can’t have children of course go this route, but just cause you have a desire to have a kid that’s related to some smart and noble prize winning candidate just doesn’t seem right.
I would consider myself lucky if my dad flipped burgers but still had time to care for me. I would rather have a dad that has no I.Q. but still loves me because I am a part of him than to have someone who has only 30 minutes for me after 10 years. Also I would be lucky to have the dumbest and ugliest kid on earth just because he/she would be mine. The whole point of doing this just because we want smart and intelligent kids just seems wrong, very wrong.
May be I am wrong to think this way. But science has taken steps that has done anything by destroyed the beauty and natural course of nature itself. I am against the Genius Sperm Bank practices. If I want a kid, I am going to have with someone I love and have their characteristics in them, than to go and find someone who I might never see or know just for the sake of having an intelligent kid. Screw that!
This is just my opinion and I feel strongly about it. I doubt anyone could change my opinion or view on this matter. I think this is extremely sad. People should be willing to become parents because they enjoy children and want a family, not because they want a return on an investment. Period.

I have heard of “genius” sperm banks before, this is actually a growing trend - has been featured on mainstream news shows like CBS Sunday Morning and ABC 20/20…I hope women will realize that there is more that goes into making a “successful” child than just genes! Love and compassion, in the form of a living dad, also helps makes kids into successful adults, I believe.
I agree with your comments, I watched the program today as well. I was just explaining the just of it to my sister in law when I did a search and saw your posting. I thought the red orange dad was weird!!! I think instead of a “higher being” we are just setting up our society to become inbreds due to the lack of knowledge of our lineage!!!!
